Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for the most common problems. If none of these help, email support@chorescape.co.uk and tell us your app version (Settings → Help & tutorials → Support shows it).
Updated for version 1.12.0. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Notifications aren't arriving
- Run the Notification check. Settings → Preferences → Notification check shows whether notifications are on for Torvan on this phone, warns if battery saving may stop them, and can send a test notification.
- Check your phone's permission. Torvan asks to send notifications when it starts. If you said no, turn them back on in your phone's settings (on Android, usually Settings → Apps → Torvan (Chore Scape in older versions) → Notifications). The bell also says when they're off, with Turn on.
- Check your quiet hours. They're on by default, overnight. Notifications in quiet hours are kept and arrive when they end. Change them in Settings → Preferences → Quiet hours. A Warrior's may have been set by their Strategist. See Quiet hours.
- Strategists: check what buzzes. In the Notification check, Notify me about can stop the buzz for one of your Warriors, or for updates. Everything still shows in the bell.
- Are you signed in? After signing out, a phone stops getting that account's notifications. Make sure you're signed in on this phone.
A reminder didn't go off
A quest reminder is only sent when all of these are true:
- the quest has a due time (not just a date);
- reminders are switched on for that quest;
- the quest is active (not already sent for review);
- it's due today;
- it isn't the Warrior's quiet hours. A reminder that falls in quiet hours waits until they end, and isn't sent at all if the quest is due before then.
Strategists: if Send Reminder doesn't work, the message says why. It could be your Warrior's quiet hours (the app offers to send it when they end), a reminder for that quest sent in the last 10 minutes, a quest that isn't waiting for action, or a Warrior whose phone isn't set up to get notifications.
The bell looks wrong
- The bell's list comes from our server, so it follows your account to another phone.
- It has two parts: Needs you (things to answer, such as proof to check or a request) and Updates. Things you've dealt with move to Recently handled.
- The red number counts what needs you plus updates you haven't seen.
- You can Clear an update, or Hide until tomorrow something that needs you. Clear all asks whether to clear everything or only updates.
- Tapping an item takes you to what it's about.
Signing in and email codes
- Forgot your password? Tap it on the sign-in screen and we'll email you a code. See Passwords.
- The email code hasn't arrived. Check your spam or junk folder. Then tap Resend Code; you may need to wait a moment before it lets you. Codes expire, so use the newest one.
- "Create Account" does nothing. Make sure the nickname and email boxes aren't empty.
- "We couldn't create an account with that email." If it's your email, you may already have an account: tap Sign in, or reset your password.
- Other sign-up messages say what to fix, such as an email address that doesn't look right, or a password that isn't strong enough (at least 10 characters, with a letter and a number). "Something went wrong. Please try again." means the problem was on our side. If it keeps happening, email us.
Linking codes
- "Invalid linking code": check you've typed the code on the Warrior's screen right now. Codes change every 24 hours, so an old one won't work. Capitals don't matter. Type the code without spaces.
- "Too many attempts": you get 10 tries every 15 minutes. Wait, then try again.
- Nothing happens after sending the request: the Warrior needs to tap Approve on their Account Link Request pop-up. If they already have a Strategist, one aged 18 or over must approve too. If none of them is 18 or over, email support.
- Can't send a link request: Strategists need a verified email address and their year of birth first, and have to be 15 or over.
No connection or old data
- If you see Can't reach Torvan (Chore Scape in older versions), you're still signed in. Check your internet connection and tap Try again.
- A red banner saying the app couldn't reach the server means you're seeing the last data it loaded. Tap Retry, or pull down on the screen to refresh.
Quest problems
- No Verify button: a quest in the future shows Unlocks and a date instead. In Focus mode, a quest waiting for review stays on screen without a button until it's approved.
- "This quest is not due yet" (Solo): Done only works on quests due today or overdue.
- "At least N photo(s) required.": take the number of photos the quest asks for.
- "That photo couldn't be used.": take or choose a different photo.
- "Upload failed.": check your connection and try again. Photos from the failed try are removed, so you start clean.
- No Gallery button: Allow Gallery Access is turned off on that phone, so Photo Source says Camera Only (Settings → Preferences → Photo Source).
- My photos have gone: when proof is denied, its photos are deleted, so take new ones. Photos are also deleted 7 days after a quest is completed, and straight away if a parent withdraws their OK.
- "Photo proof is off until a parent or guardian gives their OK", or Waiting for a parent's OK: a Warrior under 15 needs a parent's OK before they can use photo proof. Their quests still work: tap Verify, then Complete. See A parent's OK.
- "Cannot schedule quests in the past": choose today or a later date.
- My suggested quest disappeared: the Strategist declined it.
- A quest says Missed: it wasn't done and couldn't move on, usually because the same quest was due again. It can't be done any more. See Missed quests.
- I got less than the card said: missed quests pay 75% and partial credit pays 50%. See How rewards are worked out.
- My coins went down: if a Strategist has switched on the missed-quest penalty, a missed quest with reminders on takes 10% of the balance (with savings pots, 10% of what's in the Default pot, not counting money waiting to be paid out; other pots are never fined), at most once a day. Balance History, or with savings pots each pot's History, shows each change.
Payout problems
- The Royal Treasury Settlement box keeps appearing: it stays until the Warrior taps Confirm Receipt.
- Mark as Paid or Pay is greyed out: either a payout is already waiting for the Warrior to confirm, or there's nothing to pay.
- A Warrior can't ask for a payout: the payout screen says why. Usually a request is already waiting, a payout is waiting to be confirmed, it's less than 10 minutes since a "not now" or a cancel, or they've asked 5 times in the last 24 hours.
- The balance didn't go to zero after confirming: that's right. Confirming takes off only the amount that was paid.
- Payouts never show as overdue: open Settings → Preferences → Payout Schedule and tap Save.
More in Payouts.
Duels or Friends are locked
- Duels unlock at level 3 for Warriors and Solo users. Friends are inside Duels, so they open at level 3 too.
- "Friends are switched off": for under-18s, a linked Strategist has to switch them on in Settings → Account → Privacy & Friends (called Friends & Duels in older versions). For under-15s, a parent's OK is needed first. See Friends.
- "Tell us your year of birth to use Friends": tap Add year of birth.
- "Couldn't load Duels.": check your connection and tap Try again.
- Packs don't need Duels: below level 3, open them from the gift icon in the Compendium, or Open your packs on the locked Duels screen.
- Strategists: if the Duels icon has gone from your home screen, Play Duels is switched off. Switch it back on in Settings → Preferences → Play Duels.
- Can't find a pack? Packs you haven't opened wait in Packs (the Compendium's gift icon, or the Duels lobby). A new pack arrives the next time the app loads your home screen, the Compendium or Duels.
Fingerprint lock problems
- Can't turn it on: make sure a fingerprint or face is set up in your phone's own settings first.
- The scan keeps failing: tap Use password instead and sign in with your password. Your phone's PIN isn't accepted.
- It stopped asking: signing out turns it off. You're asked about it again when you sign in, unless you ticked Don't ask me again on this phone. You can always switch it back on in Settings → Account → Fingerprint Lock.
Updating the app
On Android, Torvan updates through the Google Play Store. To check for an update, open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & device. On iPhone, testers get updates through Apple's TestFlight app. Your version number is at the bottom of Settings in the app.
During our closed test, only invited testers can install Torvan. Torvan isn't offered as a download on this website any more. If you still have a copy from an older download here, it's a separate version from the Google Play one: please email support if you're not sure which you have.
If the app says Please update Torvan to keep using it. (Chore Scape in older versions), install the latest version from where you got it.
The home-screen widget
On Android, you can add a Next Quest widget from your phone's widget list. It shows your next active quest, when it's due and its reward. It works for Warriors, Solo users, and Strategists' own quests in My quests.
- It updates when you open or refresh the app, so it can be out of date. Open Torvan to refresh it.
- It's cleared when you sign out, and when a Strategist turns My quests off.
- Coins are rounded down to whole numbers. Solo and My quests show 0 coins.
- If there's nothing due, it says "No quests due — nice work!"
"…Torvan can't be used on it right now"
This screen means the account doesn't have access right now (older versions say Chore Scape, not Torvan). The message starts with the reason, for example "This account's free trial has ended". Everyone who signs up before plans go on sale in the app has free access until 31 December 2026. If you see this screen before then, please email support@chorescape.co.uk. Once it's sorted, tap Log Out and sign back in to check again. See Plans and billing.
One plan covers a household of up to 6 Warriors and 4 adults. If more people than that are linked, the extra people aren't covered by the plan, and the app explains why.
