Quests and photo proof
Everything about quests: setting them, doing them, checking the proof, suggesting new ones, asking for changes, what happens when one is missed, and reminders.
Updated for version 1.12.0. Last updated 13 October 2026.
What the badges mean
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Active | Still to do. |
| Rejected | The Strategist denied the proof and gave a reason. The quest is active again, so it can be redone. |
| Pending Review | Proof has been sent. Waiting for the Strategist to check it. |
| Awaiting Review | A quest the Warrior suggested. Waiting for the Strategist to approve it. |
| Change Requested | The Warrior has asked to change the quest. Waiting for the Strategist to answer. |
| Completed | Approved. The rewards have been added. |
| Missed | It wasn't done, and it couldn't move to a later day. It can't be done any more. A Strategist can delete it. See Missed quests. |
Issuing a quest (Strategists)
Tap Issue Quest on your home screen. The quest is for the Warrior you're looking at. The form has four steps; use Next and Back to move between them.
Step 1: Basics
- Quest Title (required).
- Instructions / Details (Optional): say exactly what "done" looks like. It saves arguments later.
Step 2: Rewards & Verification
- Coins (£): 1 coin is £1. It starts at 5. A blank or invalid entry becomes 5, and a minus sign is ignored.
- XP is always 100 per quest. You can't change it.
- Photo Verification Required is on to start with. Photos Required can be 1 to 4.
- If your Warrior is under 15 and photo proof is off until a parent gives their OK, the quest says Photos paused until a parent gives their OK. Your Warrior can complete it without photos, and it asks for photos again once the OK is given. See A parent's OK.
Step 3: Schedule
- Recurrence: One-off Quest, Repeats Daily or Repeats Weekly.
- Set Date: from today up to a year ahead. If you leave it blank, the quest is for today. Past dates aren't allowed, based on your Warrior's own time zone.
- Set Time is optional, but reminders only work if you set one.
A repeating quest makes its copies up to 60 days ahead, and more are added each night. Repeating quests show a small repeat icon after the title. Tap the quest to see how often it repeats, such as "Repeats every week on Tuesdays".
Step 4: Reminders
- Enable Reminders is on to start with.
- Up to three reminders, in minutes before the due time. They're filled in from your Reminder Defaults, or 60, 15 and 5 if none are saved. Leave a box blank to skip it.
Tap Submit Quest. The quest is active straight away, and your Warrior gets a "New quest from" notification with your nickname.
Reminders and penalties. If you've switched on the missed-quest penalty for your Warrior (Settings → Preferences → Missed-quest penalty), a missed quest with Enable Reminders on takes 10% off their coin balance (with savings pots, 10% of what's in their Default pot, not counting money waiting to be paid out; other pots are never fined), at most once a day, and they're told each time. This happens even if no reminder was sent because the quest had no time. The penalty is off unless you switch it on. See how rewards are worked out.
Editing and deleting quests (Strategists)
Tap a quest card to open its details. From there you can View Proof (completed quests), Validate Proof (proof waiting for you), Review Change (a change your Warrior asked for), Send Reminder (active quests), Delete or Edit Quest. The pencil and bin on each card do the same.
Editing
- If the quest repeats, you're asked Just this one or This and future. "This and future" only changes active copies due on or after this one. Each copy keeps its own date. Pending and completed copies are never changed.
- You can't edit a quest to a date in the past. If a quest's date has already gone, move it to today or later when you edit it.
- Changing how often a quest repeats, or turning a one-off quest into a repeating one, applies to this quest and every later one. The repeats are made again straight away from this quest's date. Later copies nobody has started are replaced; copies already sent in, done, or with a change request waiting are kept.
- A missed quest can't be edited, only deleted.
- Editing a completed quest doesn't change what was already paid.
Deleting
There's no undo. The bin deletes the quest in one tap, with no "are you sure?". Its proof photos are deleted too.
- Deleting removes that one quest. For a daily quest, the other copies stay. There's no "delete the whole series" option.
- To stop a repeating quest, edit it and set Recurrence to One-off Quest. That applies to this quest and every later one, so the later copies nobody has started are removed.
- Deleting a completed quest doesn't take back its coins or XP.
Warriors can't edit or delete any quest, including ones they suggested, but they can ask for a change.
Completing a quest (Warriors)
When a quest is due, it has a Verify button. A quest in the future shows Unlocks and a date instead.
If the quest needs photos
- Tap Verify. The box shows how many photos you've taken and how many are needed.
- Tap Camera (or Gallery, if it's allowed). Tap the ✕ on a photo to remove it.
- If you only did part of it, tick Only partially done (reduced credit).
- Tap Submit Campaign Proof.
If the quest doesn't need photos
Tap Verify, then Complete. Or tap Partial Credit if you only did part of it.
What happens next
- The quest shows Pending Review, and every linked Strategist gets a notification, such as "Sam finished a quest".
- If it's approved, the rewards are added and the Warrior gets "Quest approved!".
- If it's denied, the quest goes back to active with a red "Rejected" banner giving the reason, and the Warrior gets "Not quite yet" with the quest's title. The photos are removed, so take new ones.
Partial credit pays half the coins and half the XP.
Photos and privacy
- Before a photo leaves the phone, its location and other hidden details (EXIF data) are removed. It's also resized to at most 2048 pixels. We also check stored photos and remove any location data that versions older than 1.6.5 left in.
- Photos are seen by the Warrior and every Strategist linked to them. The app tells Warriors this.
- Photos aren't end-to-end encrypted. Because we run the service, we can access stored photos too, but we only look when we need to. See Who at Torvan can see your data.
- For a Warrior under 15, photo proof needs a parent's OK first. See A parent's OK.
- Your phone asks for camera permission the first time you tap Camera. On Android, Gallery uses Android's photo picker, which doesn't need a permission.
- To allow only fresh photos, go to Settings → Preferences → Photo Source and turn off Allow Gallery Access (it then says Camera Only). This hides the Gallery button on that phone. It's a setting on the Warrior's own phone, so a Strategist can't lock it.
- If an upload fails part-way, the photos already uploaded are removed, so trying again starts clean.
- Photos are deleted 7 days after the quest is completed. They're deleted sooner when proof is denied, when the quest is deleted, and when the account is deleted, and straight away if a parent withdraws their OK. A phone that has already shown a photo can keep a copy in the app's cache for a while after that.
Checking proof (Strategists)
- On a Pending Review card, or in the quest's details, tap Validate Proof. Tap a photo to zoom it full screen.
- Tap Approve. You'll see what was paid, such as "Quest completed! +5 coins, +100 XP".
- Or tap Deny, type a reason in Reason for rejection and tap Confirm Rejection. Your Warrior sees the reason.
- Undo appears for 6 seconds after you approve or deny. Undoing an approval takes back the coins, the XP and any day-completion bonus. Card packs aren't taken back.
- Undoing a denial puts the quest back to Pending Review, with its photos.
- To approve several at once, tap Select next to the day heading, tick the Pending Review quests, then tap Approve N selected. There's no confirmation and no undo for this.
- The review box doesn't say if your Warrior asked for partial credit. The coin figure in the "Quest completed!" message is the clue.
Always type a reason when you deny. If the reason is empty, your Warrior is told the quest was sent back but not why, and the card just says Active.
Suggesting a quest (Warriors)
- The Warrior taps Propose Quest and fills in the same four steps, including a coin amount.
- It's saved as Awaiting Review.
- The Strategist gets a notification, and the suggestion waits in their bell.
- The Strategist taps Review Proposal and chooses:
- Approve & Activate Quest: it becomes active and the Warrior is told you said yes to their idea.
- Modify Quest Before Activating: change it (including the date), and it's activated when saved.
- Decline Proposal: deletes it straight away, with no confirmation and no reason. The Warrior isn't told; it just disappears.
Strategists: check the suggested coins before approving. The quest pays what was proposed. A repeating suggestion only makes its copies once approved.
Asking to change a quest (Warriors)
A Warrior can ask for a change to a quest they've been given, such as a later time or different coins. Nothing changes until a Strategist says yes.
- Tap a quest that's still to do to open its details, then tap Propose a change.
- Tap Change on anything you'd like to be different: the title, details, date, time, coins or photo proof. The XP, how often it repeats and its reminders can't be changed this way.
- On a repeating quest, choose Just this one or This and future repeats.
- Add a note for your Strategist if you like, then tap Send to Strategist.
- The quest shows Change Requested until a Strategist answers. To take the request back, open the quest and tap Withdraw.
- If the quest is missed before anyone answers, the request closes.
- Solo accounts don't have this: in Solo there's no one to ask.
Answering a change (Strategists)
You get a notification, and the quest card shows Review Change. It shows what the quest says now next to what was asked for, with the Warrior's note. Then choose:
- Approve Change: the quest changes as asked.
- Edit Before Approving: change what they asked for, then approve it.
- Deny: the quest stays as it is. Add a reason if you like; your Warrior sees it.
If you edit the quest yourself while a change is waiting, the app warns you first when your edit would close the request.
Missed quests
Each night, a quest that was due yesterday and is still active usually moves to today. A one-off quest can move again each night until it's done. The Warrior sees a calm amber banner, "Missed -- moved from…". This happens overnight. The Warrior gets a "Quests rolled over" notification, which waits until their quiet hours end, and it's in their bell too.
- A quest that has been missed pays 75% of its coins and XP when it's finished. The card still shows the full reward.
- A quest already sent for review (Pending Review) doesn't move. A Rejected quest does, because it's active again.
- A quest doesn't move, and is marked Missed on its own day instead, when another quest with the same name is due by today, or when it's a copy of a repeating quest and its next copy is already due. So a missed copy of a daily quest never moves.
- A Missed quest can't be done any more, and pays nothing. A Strategist can delete it. A change request on it closes.
- If the missed-quest penalty is switched on for the Warrior, it's taken before the quest moves, and only for a quest's first miss. See how rewards are worked out.
- When a Strategist looks at a Warrior's quests, the cards don't show the amber banner. A Strategist's own quests in My quests move the same way, and do show it.
Reminders
Reminders are notifications sent to the Warrior's phone a set number of minutes before a quest is due.
- A reminder only goes out if the quest has a due time, is active and is due today.
- Each quest can have up to three reminders, and each one goes out once.
- A reminder that falls in the Warrior's quiet hours waits until they end. If the quest is due before they end, that reminder isn't sent.
- If a quest moves to another day or time (for example, it's missed and moved to today, or it's edited), its reminders go out again.
Reminder Defaults
Settings → Preferences → Reminder Defaults sets the three reminder times that every new quest starts with. There's one set per Warrior, shared by the Warrior and all their Strategists. Leave a box blank to skip it. Changes only affect new quests. Solo accounts don't have this setting; their quests start at 60, 15 and 5 minutes. A Strategist using My quests has a set of their own for their own quests, in Settings from Me.
Send Reminder (Strategists)
Open an active quest's details and tap Send Reminder. Your Warrior gets "Reminder from" and your nickname, with the quest title. It won't send when:
- it's your Warrior's quiet hours: the app offers to send it when they end instead;
- you sent a reminder for that quest in the last 10 minutes;
- the quest isn't waiting for action (for example, it's already Pending Review);
- your Warrior's phone isn't registered for notifications.
The message you see says which of these it is.
Focus mode (Warriors)
Next to the day heading on the Warrior's home screen is a FOCUS MODE switch. It only works when today is selected. It shows just the first quest that isn't finished yet, which helps with one thing at a time. When everything's done you'll see "All done for today!".
A quest waiting for review counts as not finished. So a quest you've just sent stays as the only one showing, without a Verify button, until your Strategist approves it. Focus mode is saved on that phone.
